8 DIY Natural Root Growth Enhancers for Your Plants

In this exploration, we uncover eight homemade, natural solutions that act as effective rooting agents for plant propagation through cuttings.

These natural enhancers stimulate root growth, accelerate the development of fruit, and contribute to the formation of robust roots.

Commercial rooting hormones often contain auxin indole butyric acid, crucial for root growth. Salicylic acid is also employed to defend against bacterial and fungal attacks. At home, however, you have the option to craft your own rooting stimulants using elements like aloe vera, willow extract, honey, cinnamon, and aspirin.

Aloe vera and willow extract come packed with natural rooting compounds, while honey, cinnamon, and aspirin offer antibacterial and antifungal benefits.

Plant cuttings, whether from softwood or semi-hardwood, can be easily propagated using these methods. Start by selecting an eight-inch cutting, strip off the leaves, and apply your homemade rooting aid before planting it in soil.

Here’s a look at the eight DIY rooting techniques:

1. Honey Mixture:

Boil two cups of water and dissolve a teaspoon of honey. Once cooled, store in a shaded area. Immerse the cuttings in this mixture for a few hours before planting.

2. Preparing the Cutting:

Trim the leaves from your cutting, ensuring not to cut at the growth base. Over a few days, the residual parts will fall, paving the way for new growth. Sharpen the end of the stem, and place it in soil mixed with sand, perlite, and gravel. Gently press the soil around the planted cutting and water thoroughly.

3. Perlite Propagation:

In the absence of commercial rooting hormones, perlite serves as a viable alternative. Its airy structure retains water, aiding in root development. Immerse the cutting in honey, then plant in perlite.

4. Aloe Vera Use:

Utilize the pulp of fresh aloe vera leaves as a natural rooting agent. Snip a leaf, extract the pulp, and dip your cuttings in it before planting. This pulp can be preserved in a sealed container for a week.

5. Willow Extract:

Boil willow bark, branches, and stems for a day to create willow water. Dip your cuttings in this concoction for about ten minutes before planting.

6. Saliva as a Rooting Aid:

The antiseptic and antibacterial properties of human or animal saliva can help prevent rot in cuttings.

7. Aspirin Solution:

Dissolve an aspirin tablet or a spoonful of powdered aspirin in water. Soak the cuttings in this solution for a quarter of an hour before planting.

8. Cinnamon Application:

Dust the cuttings with cinnamon powder, leveraging its antibacterial traits, before planting.

Each of these methods offers a distinctive and natural approach to boosting plant cuttings’ growth, serving as handy alternatives to synthetic rooting hormones.
