How to reuse barbecue ashes?

How to Reuse Barbecue Ashes

After enjoying a barbecue outdoors on a sunny day, the tendency is often to discard the leftover ashes. However, these ashes can be very beneficial for promoting the growth of garden plants, as well as for cleaning and degreasing various household surfaces. Instead of throwing them away, consider storing them. To do so, collect the cooled ashes and sift them to remove residues. Discover why you shouldn’t dispose of barbecue ashes.

Benefits of Barbecue Ashes

Barbecue ashes are rich in magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium, making them beneficial for garden plants. They can also be used to scrub and clean various household surfaces.

Why You Shouldn’t Discard Barbecue Ashes

Barbecue ashes can be recycled in various ways.

1. Using Barbecue Ashes in the Garden

Soil Correction: Barbecue ashes effectively neutralize soil acidity, thus aiding plants’ growth. Earthworms and essential micro-organisms might not thrive in acidic soil. Soil acidity can also prevent plants from absorbing certain nutrients. To avoid smothering the soil, use ashes sparingly—only 70 to 100g per square meter and once a year. Note that certain plants, like rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, and blue hydrangeas, prefer acidic soil. Avoid spreading ashes near these plants.

Lawn Care: Sprinkling barbecue ashes on the lawn can stimulate worm and micro-organism activity, preventing moss growth and improving water infiltration.

Natural Fertilizer: Thanks to their mineral content, especially potash, ashes can act as an effective fertilizer. Potash promotes the growth of tubers, roots, and fruits and enhances the color of fruits and flowers while boosting plant resistance to diseases.

Natural Pesticide: Ashes can repel pests like slugs, aphids, and other bugs. To protect plants, create a natural barrier using ashes. Reapply ashes after watering or rainfall. It’s best to spread ashes at the end of winter to prevent them from getting wet and losing their effectiveness.

2. Using Barbecue Ashes at Home

Window Cleaning: Ashes can remove stains on windows. Sift the ashes first to remove any large residues. Wet a newspaper sheet slightly, apply ashes, scrub the window, and wipe with a microfiber cloth.

Shining Silver and Copper Items: To polish silver and copper items, wet a cloth slightly and dip it into ashes. Scrub the objects, rinse with clean water, and dry with a dry microfiber cloth.

Cleaning Oven Glass: Ashes can remove grease stains from oven glass. Mix some ashes in water, dip a microfiber sponge, squeeze it lightly, scrub the oven glass, and dry with a clean cloth.

In conclusion, by recycling barbecue ashes, you can benefit your garden and clean various household surfaces. There’s no need to discard these useful remnants!
