10 Veggies and Fragrant Herbs You Can Grow in Just a Glass of Water!

Cultivating veggies and herbs indoors is more than just a productive task; it’s a delightful and aesthetic journey. The magic unfolds when you realize that several plants can sprout in water, bypassing the traditional route of soil-filled pots.

Observing the full growth arc of a plant, from its visible parts to the intricate roots usually concealed by the earth, is a pure treat when using the water propagation technique.

Let’s dive into a list of herbs and veggies ripe for the water-growing adventure:

1. Basil:

This fragrant favorite in kitchens, particularly in Italian dishes, can be sprouted in water. Snip off 10 cm stems and submerge them in a water-filled container. Wait for the roots to reach around 5 cm before moving the basil to a pot or garden bed.

2. Oregano:

Grow oregano from water-based cuttings. Maintain a warmth of 18-21°C and ensure generous sunlight. Remember, oregano nurtured in pots or water may be more susceptible to cold than their ground-based counterparts.

3. Rosemary:

Initiate rosemary growth by submerging 15 cm stems in water, leaving only the top foliage exposed. Expect root formations in about 1-2 weeks. After this, transition the rosemary to a pot or garden setting.

4. Parsley:

This ubiquitous kitchen herb flourishes in water. Immerse the cuttings, ensuring water replacement every few days. Once roots anchor, transfer the parsley into a pot or outdoor patch.

5. Mint:

Mint proliferates, especially in the warmer months. Secure cuttings in a water-filled glass near a sunny window. Roots usually appear in days during summer, but winter might extend the wait to a couple of weeks.

6. Lemon Balm:

Similar to its herbaceous peers, lemon balm can sprout in water. Clip 5-7.5 cm stems, ensuring only top foliage remains. Ensure ample light and frequent water changes.

7. Stevia:

Cultivate this natural sweetener in just a water-filled glass. Once rooted, plant it outside to later harvest its sweet leaves.

8. Lettuce:

Reuse the base of a bought lettuce head. Situate the stem in a dish with around 2.5 cm of water under sunlight. Refresh the water bi-daily, and in about 10 days, you’ll notice fledgling leaves, albeit smaller than the original.

9. Celery:

Replicate the lettuce method with celery. Retain 5 cm of the stem, ensuring daily water replacement. Within a week, the budding roots signal it’s ready for transplantation to nutrient-rich earth.

10. Spinach:

With fresh spinach stems, some water, and a root growth enhancer, you can kickstart spinach growth. Post a 10-day period, it’s ready for a more permanent, soil-based home.

Water-based propagation is more than just an agricultural experiment; it’s a front-row seat to nature’s marvels. It’s also a green light to cultivate a lush indoor garden sans the pots or dirt. So, gather some snippings, a glass of water, and start your sustainable growing expedition.
